"Circuliv," a Circular Brand from Northern Europe
Announces Limited Edition Items Made with Premium Nordic Salmon Leather, Debuting in the Japanese Market
February 23, 2026 | Stockholm
Circuliv, a platform introducing circular sustainable brands from Northern Europe to the Japanese market, has announced its first launch of products made from sustainable materials originating from Northern Europe for the Japanese market. This initiative aims to connect the cultural values of Northern Europe and Japan, centered around circular manufacturing that regenerates discarded by-products into valuable materials.
Giving new value to discarded materials
One of the symbolic materials of this project is salmon leather, a by-product of the food industry. Fish skin, which would normally be discarded, is tanned using environmentally friendly processes and regenerated into a durable and beautiful leather material.
In recent years, as the environmental impact and resource usage of the fashion industry have been internationally questioned, consumer awareness has also changed significantly. It is no longer enough to simply choose products that are "environmentally friendly"; consumers are now required to understand what kind of materials, through what processes, lead to what kind of future before making a choice. Salmon leather is a circular material that transforms waste into new value, and when combined with Nordic design, it becomes an option for consumers to express their commitment to the environment and society through their purchasing decisions.
Circuliv proposes this material to the Japanese market not merely as an alternative material or a "temporary trend," but as a choice that can be used for a long time, symbolizing an attitude towards the future. This stance of not wasting resources deeply resonates with Japan's "mottainai" spirit.
Craftsmanship connected by Nordic and Japanese values
Nordic design philosophy emphasizes functionality, durability, and minimalism, assuming that products will be used across generations. This idea is shared with the Japanese concepts of "beauty in utility" and "mindful living."
Circuliv emphasizes not just exporting foreign brands to Japan, but also conveying their cultural background and philosophy. The aim is for values nurtured in different lands, Northern Europe and Japan, to naturally connect through the axis of sustainability.
Limited Edition, Small Batch, FSC® Packaging
Production system that respects craftsmanship
All salmon leather products developed this time are produced in small, limited batches. Instead of mass production, Nordic artisans in Sweden meticulously craft each item by hand at their Stockholm atelier.
This production system not only reduces inventory risk and overproduction, but also creates a mechanism where the skills and background of the creators are properly valued. For consumers, it means products where "who, where, and how it was made" are visible. Furthermore, the product boxes are meticulously crafted by the designer themselves in Stockholm. For shipping, the packaging boxes use FSC® recycled materials, with minimal packaging to ensure that what reaches the consumer is recyclable or generates minimal waste.
A Bridge Built by Japanese Entrepreneurs Living Abroad
Circuliv was founded by Coco Engström, originally from Japan and currently based in Sweden. Through her life in Northern Europe, she encountered a sustainable mindset and craftsmanship that genuinely respects nature and resources, and is predicated on long-term use.
"What choices can we leave for the children living on this earth?" "Can we create a society where we can still enjoy beautiful things without undue burden?" With these questions as her starting point, Circuliv was born to convey Nordic philosophy, materials, and artisan craftsmanship to Japan. The brand name is a portmanteau of "Circular" and "Liv" (a Nordic word meaning "life, living, existence"). It embodies a strong commitment to curating only items that one would want to continue using 10 or 20 years from now, and connecting them to the future.
Future Developments
Circuliv plans to expand collaborations with sustainable brands and artisans across Northern Europe for the Japanese market, progressively introducing lifestyle goods, fashion accessories, and more. For all products, Circuliv emphasizes transparent communication regarding material origins, production background, and environmental considerations.
